American Ballads and Folk Songs
I ain't been long in this here army, Just a few days since I arrive. Think I'll like it better than a-farmin'— Got no cows to milk and drive.
Bump-ta-rump-tum. Bum. Bum.
The very first thing in the morning, A feller with a horn makes a lot of noise. Then another feller they calls the Sergeant Says: "Get up, now. Turn out, boys."
Then they take you to the bathroom, Place like that, I never seen before. Water comes in through a hole in the ceiling, Runs right out through a hole in the floor.
They teach you about this soldier business,
How to march and turn around.
Put a gun upon your shoulder,
"One, two, three," and you put it on the ground.
They teach you about the signal business, A feller waves a flag at a feller far away. But one thing, I can't get on to: How does he know what he's trying to say?
